New York City

New York City - Manhattan

New York City

I’ve been in New York for a few days for work but now that Ross has arrived we an get into tourist mode and celebrate his birthday in this amazing city.

This is Ross’ first time in NYC so we have hit all of the major attractions.  Something that wasn’t completed last time I was here was the Ground Zero memorial so we spend a morning at the National September 11 Memorial.  The theme of the memorial is ‘Reflecting Absence’, there are two imposing reflecting pools that occupy the very footprints of the ill-fated twin towers. From their rim, a steady cascade of water pours 30ft down towards a central void. Bronze panels frame the pools, inscribed with the names of those who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and in the World Trade Center car bombing on February 26, 1993.  As to be expected it is quite sombre, and makes an impact on both of us probably due to the fact that each of us easily recalls where we were and what we were doing on that day. Devastating.

Since we are downtown we wind through Wall St and make our way down to the The Staten Island Ferry terminal, which is the free ferry to Staten Island which passes right by the Statue of Liberty – a great way to see it if like us, you don’t plan to visit Ellis or Liberty Island.

Every trip to New York requires a visit to Times Square even if it’s just to get your bearings and decide which direction to explore next.  I visited the Empire State building last time I was here so we decided to do Top of the Rock this time.  Designed in homage to ocean liners and first opened in 1933, this 70th-floor, open-air observation deck sits atop the GE Building, the tallest skyscraper at the Rockefeller Center. Top of the Rock trumps the Empire State Building on several levels: it’s less crowded, has wider observation decks (both outdoor and indoor) and actually offers a view of the Empire State Building itself which we really liked.
