German Stein in Munich

Munich

I’ve ended up in Munich a lot longer than planned but that’s no problem as its an awesome city which I have been enjoying much more than I anticipated.  Germany is a place I have always wanted to visit since studying German for 4 years at school (don’t remember anything) but, oddly, I didn’t have any preconceived ideas of what it would be like.

The world cup is on at the moment which is being hosted here so the atmosphere in the city is possibly a little crazier than it would be normally but it feels fantastic.

On my first ay I sent out to Dachau, read about it here: Germany’s First Concentration Camp

That evening I went to the Olympic Stadium which is where ‘Fan Fest’ for the World cup was being held and we watched Spain play Italy – it was crazy.  So many people & so much beer – amazing!  I got very drunk, lost the group I was with but jumped on to a pub-crawl being run my another hostel and ended up home about 5.30am.  Needless to say the next day was a ‘write-off’.

By mid afternoon I did force myself to get out and took a train out to Füssen to see the famous castle built by King Ludwig II, Schloss Neuschwanstein (which the disney castle is based on).

Neuschwanstein Castle is a nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany.

It was really beautiful, I’m so glad I made it out of bed.

Also in Munich, I took a bike tour of the city which made stops at many significant buildings and provided lots of information about WWII and how it affected the people of Munich. It wouldn’t be german had we not made a few stops at the best beer gardens along the way.  Was a fun tour.

Everyone from the bike tour went to a cocktail bar afterwards, once again, ended up drinking way to much. Although I have no recollection of what the rest of the evening comprised of, I do have about 270 photos which document the missing 6 hours. Many, many, selfies with statues of bears, eating a giant pretzel, multiple steins at Hofbräuhaus and drinks with some very fun looking people in Lederhosen….. ‘When in Rome, Munich’.

Slept in the following morning and missed my bus, again! So am spending a quiet day in English gardens to relax.
